VETOPTIMAL · DOG OWNERSHIP GUIDE

What does it really cost to own a dog?

Every walk is priceless. Everyday care still needs a budget. Choose a breed, then make the numbers your own.

From food and treats to insurance and vet care, the cost of looking after a dog can soon add up. Knowing what to budget helps you plan for their everyday needs and the extras that are easy to overlook. Use our UK dog ownership cost calculator to explore estimated costs for 10 popular breeds.

Adjust the figures to suit your dog and lifestyle, and see your personalised monthly and yearly budget

Starting figures are illustrative monthly allowances for a healthy adult dog. Change any amount below.

Add walking, holidays and other costs

Enter boarding as a monthly allowance: annual boarding bill ÷ 12.

The costs that are easy to miss

Buying or adopting your dog, initial equipment, puppy vaccinations, neutering, training and unexpected treatment can add to the total. Insurance can leave excesses, co-payments and excluded treatment for you to pay. Enter extra monthly allowances above if you want these included.

If a vet health plan already includes boosters or parasite treatment, adjust those rows to avoid counting them twice. Setting insurance to £0 does not remove the risk of vet bills.

How we calculated these figures

Annual cost = monthly allowances × 12. Daily cost = annual cost ÷ 365. All breed-specific food, insurance and grooming allowances are editorial budgeting assumptions, not surveyed averages or quotes. Get an insurance quote for your dog's age, breed, postcode and cover, and check local vet and grooming prices.

PDSA lists minimum monthly costs of £69 for small dogs, £83 for medium dogs and £116 for large dogs, using prices calculated in 2024. These include insurance and routine care, but exclude illness or injury treatment and services such as grooming, boarding and training. Our model includes broader allowances and should not be described as PDSA breed estimates.
